Andrew (Boy) Charlton Pool will soon close to carry out critical, extensive maintenance work and transition the pool heating system to electric heat pumps.

We’re carrying out critical and extensive maintenance work to Andrew (Boy) Charlton Pool.

The pool operates seasonally and closes from 1 May to 31 August every year.

Works will begin in May after the pool closes. We expect to reopen the pool on 1 September 2025, in time for the start of the summer season.

  • Cook + Phillip Park Pool is nearby, opposite Hyde Park between St Mary’s Cathedral and the Australian Museum.

    Other City of Sydney pools in Camperdown, Zetland, Surry Hills and Ultimo are open all year.

  • Alternative outdoor swimming options include;

  • 360 Pro Membership, 360 Pro Visit Pass & Learn to Swim Family Membership holders will continue to have access to our five other centres.

    360 Active Membership and 360 Active Visit Pass holders will continue to have access to the outdoor swimming pools at Victoria Park Pool and Prince Alfred Park Pool.

    They will also have access to the nearby Cook + Phillip Park Pool which is located opposite Hyde Park until Andrew (Boy) Charlton Pool reopens.

    Please note that these provisions only apply to memberships or passes purchased prior to May 2024. Any memberships or passes purchased after this date will be subject to updated terms and conditions, and subject to applicable product benefits and entitlements.

  • The current Learn to Swim program at Andrew (Boy) Charlton Pool will finish on Sunday 21 April 2024.

    Centre staff will contact existing program participants to offer spaces at our three indoor centres, which offer an all-year-round learn to swim program in heated pools with experienced instructors, and the same comprehensive learn to swim carriculum.

  • These works will ensure our residents, workers and visitors continue to enjoy world-class facilities.

    Members can continue to access other City of Sydney pools based on your membership type. We’re also making Cook + Phillip Park Pool available to 360 Active Membership and 360 Active Visit Pass holders while work at Andrew (Boy) Charlton Pool takes place.

    Otherwise, members can request an extended membership suspension while the centre is closed.

  • We’re replacing the tiles and waterproof membrane on the main 50m outdoor pool, as well as the smaller 20m program pool.

    Essential maintenance will be carried out on the pool’s concrete and steel structure. A new lift will be installed and the timber in the grandstand and concourse decking will be replaced.

    We’re also replacing the gas heating system with electric heat pumps to make this vital piece of community infrastructure future proof.

    The City of Sydney is committed to tackling climate change and we aim to reach our net zero goal by 2035. All our operations are powered by 100% renewable electricity and transitioning away from polluting fossil fuels will be crucial to reducing emissions in our operations.

  • All parts of the centre including both pools, the multipurpose room and cafe will be closed.

  • Activities like swimming lessons and coaching, group fitness classes and aqua aerobics are available at our 5 other pools.

  • The existing parking next to the centre will not be accessible while the works take place.

  • OzPaddle will continue to operate kayaking activities from its launch point next to the centre, which is outside the planned work zone. Access to the launch point from the external sandstone stairs via Mrs Macquaries Road will remain open, but access to the centre and its amenities will not be possible.

  • Certain pathways near the pool will be temporarily fenced off during construction work at the centre. Alternative routes are open to the community.

  • The works require a total closure of the centre.

  • Maintaining outdoor pools, particularly in difficult to access environments like this one which extends over the harbour, can be challenging and often takes longer than other outdoor pools.

    Works will begin in May after the pool is closed. It’s closed every year during the cooler months. We expect to reopen the pool on 1 September 2025, in time for the start of the summer season.

  • The pool operates seasonally and closes from 1 May to 31 August every year.

  • Andrew (Boy) Charlton Pool is the only saltwater pool managed by the City of Sydney.
